Why Joshua Tree Was Perfect for Their Elopement

Maria and Irvin found me through a Google search. They were looking to renew their vows five years after their first wedding. Their original celebration had been stressful — from a venue that didn’t set up enough seats to a planning process that felt like it was for everyone but them. As Maria told me, she remembered crying before the wedding, overwhelmed by how little joy she felt in the process.

When they came across my website, they didn’t realize at first that I was more than just a photographer. As a Joshua Tree elopement photographer and planner, I offer full-day packages that go far beyond just snapping photos — I help couples create intentional days that reflect their relationship. After learning about how I help with location ideas, permits, timelines, and more, they told me they wished they’d known about this the first time around.

They loved the idea of spending a full day doing whatever they wanted, in one of their favorite national parks.

Getting Ready + Drinks at Red Dog Saloon

Maria and Irvin got ready at their Airbnb near Joshua Tree and then met me at the Red Dog Saloon for some drinks and lunch. I recommended this place because of its western saloon-style charm, and it fit their vibe perfectly. I got some candid photos of them enjoying their intimate lunch before the real adventure began.

After lunch, we drove into Joshua Tree National Park, entering through the west entrance. About 10–15 minutes later, we reached Hidden Valley, one of the first iconic stops inside the park.

We parked and scouted around until they found a special spot between two large Joshua trees. It framed their vow renewal beautifully under the golden desert light. This is one of the official permitted ceremony locations in the park, which makes it a great choice for couples planning a Joshua Tree National Park elopement.

How to Get a Permit to Elope in Joshua Tree National Park

  1. Choose your ceremony location — Hidden Valley, Cap Rock, and Indian Cove are some of the approved spots.
  2. Fill out the Special Use Permit application — download it from the NPS website.
  3. Email the completed form to: jotr_permit_office@nps.gov
  4. Pay the $120 permit fee — they’ll send you instructions once they review your application.
  5. Wait for approval — usually takes 2–4 weeks.
  6. Bring your approved permit on the elopement day — rangers may check.

When’s the Best Time to Elope in Joshua Tree?

Fall and Spring are the sweet spots.

🍂 October – November
Cooler temps (mid 60s–70s during the day), gorgeous golden sunsets, and still warm enough for sunrise or sunset hikes.

🌸 March – April
Wildflowers might bloom if the desert got rain, and it’s perfect light jacket weather. Sunrise and sunset are incredible during this time.

🥵 What to Avoid:

  • Summer (June–August): It’s 🔥🔥🔥 — like 100°F+ hot. Not fun in a wedding dress or suit.
  • Winter nights (Dec–Feb): Can drop below freezing once the sun dips, especially after blue hour. Wind chills are real.

📸 Pro Tip:
The best light is either sunrise (for privacy and soft golden glow) or sunset into blue hour (for drama, mood, and lantern photos).

Sunset Portraits + Cholla Cactus Garden Picnic

Next, we headed to Cholla Cactus Garden for sunset. The golden hour light here is something else — it lights up the cacti in a surreal glow.

Maria and Irvin added my dreamy picnic setup with snacks and wedding cake, which they didn’t need to plan or set up themselves. That’s part of one of my luxury elopement add-ons.

After some fun picnic shots and cake, I pulled out my off-camera lighting setup as we entered my favorite time of day — blue hour.

Blue Hour Photos + Lantern Magic

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the sky shifted into cooler tones. I brought out my off-camera flash and lanterns to capture the dreamiest photos of the day. The warm glow of the lanterns balanced with the twilight made for editorial, almost surreal images.

You won’t find many photographers who can confidently work with off-camera flash and create magazine-worthy elopement photos in the desert. It’s one of the things that sets me apart as a Joshua Tree elopement photographer.

And then I told them to just twirl and soak it in — and wow. The light, the lanterns, the whole vibe… it was LIT. Like, literally 🔥💡

KBBQ + Stars at Jumbo Rocks Campground

We ended the night at Jumbo Rocks Campground, where I had a reserved site ready to go. I guided them to a tucked-away spot with their own private “backyard” of massive boulders — the perfect setup for a peaceful, off-grid elopement ending.

Maria and Irvin chose my Korean BBQ elopement add-on, so they didn’t have to worry about dinner either. We rolled up with a cooler full of marinated meats, fired up the grill, and captured some fun shots of them cooking together under the stars. After a cozy campfire meal, we wrapped the night with romantic photos under the Milky Way.

They got it all — golden hour, blue hour, AND galactic hour. ✨🌌

A Personal Note from Their Photographer

Hidden Valley is actually where I proposed to my wife. It was special to share this location with another couple who wanted an experience filled with connection and joy. Being their Joshua Tree elopement photographer and planner was an honor.

Final Thoughts: Why Hire a Joshua Tree Elopement Photographer & Planner

Maria and Irvin’s first wedding didn’t feel like their own. Their vow renewal? It was everything they hoped for.

From our first consultation to scouting locations, assisting with permits, providing a picnic, and setting up a full KBBQ dinner — all they had to do was show up. I planned the rest.

If you’re dreaming of a day like this, I’d love to help you plan an intentional, epic elopement as your trusted Joshua Tree elopement photographer and planner.
